This program offers a chance to examine the music industry—particularly popular music—through historical, theoretical, and research-based lenses, alongside contemporary discussions and hands-on learning. Leveraging Glasgow's dynamic music scene, featuring numerous venues, festivals, and small-to-medium music enterprises, this degree stands out for its emphasis on practical experience. Students can engage in structured projects with established music companies and artists or pursue entrepreneurial ventures under supervision. The curriculum is interdisciplinary, incorporating diverse academic perspectives and drawing on the University's strengths in sociology, cultural studies, musicology, and political science. Located in Glasgow, the UK's inaugural UNESCO City of Music, students will enjoy access to facilities such as seminar rooms, practice spaces, a compact library, an audio lab, studios, and the University's concert hall.
Graduates will gain pathways to launch or advance careers in music or related creative industries. The program equips students with: hands-on industry experience through project-based or entrepreneurial tracks, analytical skills to assess music industry research from various sources (academics, advocacy groups, policymakers), and an understanding of core theoretical, historical, and methodological discussions in music and popular music studies.
