This ESRC-accredited research training program delivers comprehensive, advanced instruction in analyzing and addressing the world's most urgent challenges, including global conflicts, terrorism, environmental crises, and rapid globalization. Grounded in international relations theory, our curriculum develops your ability to employ methodological tools and research frameworks to tackle contemporary societal issues. The program provides specialized training in applying international relations perspectives to complex geopolitical problems while developing your analytical skills through rigorous research design and political data interpretation. Sharing foundational content with our International Relations MSc, the MRes emphasizes advanced methodological preparation for doctoral studies. Our faculty expertise spans international relations theory, normative theory, security studies, global governance, non-state actors, human rights, humanitarian action, and political economy. You'll engage with interdisciplinary perspectives through courses across Social & Political Sciences, Law, History, and related fields. The program connects you with cutting-edge research initiatives including the Global Security Roundtable, Glasgow Centre for International Development, and Human Rights Network. A highlight is our Brussels study trip, offering direct exposure to international policymaking through visits to institutions like the EU, NATO, and World Bank - providing valuable professional connections in this competitive field.
This program particularly suits students pursuing academic careers through PhD studies, while also equipping graduates for professional roles in NGOs, international organizations (UN, EU), government, media, and think tanks. Our College Employability Office supports students through dissertation collaborations, career development workshops, and networking opportunities with alumni and industry leaders through speaker series and professional events.
