Heterogeneous catalysis plays a vital role across the chemical industry, from petroleum refining to pharmaceutical production. This process finds applications in diverse fields including pharmaceuticals, research, commercial product development, manufacturing, and sustainable energy solutions like biodiesel production. The program equips students with hands-on research capabilities in heterogeneous catalysis while providing comprehensive theoretical knowledge of its industrial applications. No prior catalysis experience is necessary.
Our research initiatives span various areas: novel catalytic materials, petrochemicals, specialty chemicals, energy applications, fuel production, and catalyst degradation studies. The School of Chemistry has continuously expanded its research capabilities, with our Heterogeneous Catalysis Section boasting some of the UK's most advanced laboratory facilities. This attracts collaborations with leading industry partners including Johnson Matthey, BP, Syngenta, SABIC, Saudi Aramco, Huntsman, Sasol, Invista & Innospec. The program prepares students for professional careers in both industrial and academic settings by developing essential research skills and theoretical understanding. Participants undertake two research projects under dual supervision: one from University of Glasgow faculty and another from industry-experienced honorary staff. To maximize its value, the program incorporates specialized short courses that are also available to industry professionals.
