Textile Conservation is an interdisciplinary field blending scholarly expertise with cultural appreciation, artistic discernment, and technical proficiency. This MPhil serves as both an academic curriculum and vocational preparation, offering a foundation of conceptual understanding and hands-on training to help you advance the study and safeguarding of culturally important textile objects.
This unique program stands alone in the UK and ranks among just a handful of specialized textile conservation courses globally. You'll work in our dedicated conservation labs while enjoying strong connections with Glasgow Museums and the University's Hunterian Museum. Glasgow's civic and academic collections rank among Europe's most extensive and varied, holding global significance. You'll have access to the museums' exceptional textile collections while learning from visiting experts across Scottish and UK museums. The program includes a project-based placement where you can investigate potential career paths, network with professionals, and enhance your abilities.
Most alumni from this program and its forerunner, the Textile Conservation Centre's MA, now hold positions in museums and cultural institutions worldwide. Graduates boast exceptional employment rates upon completion and sustained careers in the field, now working across nearly 40 countries in leadership roles. Our alumni have contributed to conservation efforts from San Francisco to Singapore and New Zealand to Alaska. Many have secured prestigious fellowships and internships at institutions like Historic Royal Palaces, the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, and the Abegg-Stiftung. These opportunities frequently lead to permanent positions at renowned institutions including the British Museum, National Museums Scotland, and Historic Royal Palaces.
