The University of Glasgow is home to the UK's sole academic department focused entirely on Scottish Literature studies and research.
At Glasgow, Scottish literature plays a distinctive role, having been established as an independent discipline since the 1970s. As a comparatively young academic field, Scottish literary studies presents numerous research opportunities. The university provides an ideal setting for groundbreaking postgraduate and postdoctoral work. Glasgow's Scottish literature program benefits from close ties to important archival collections, including the university's Special Collections and the city's Mitchell Library. Additionally, we maintain strong relationships with Edinburgh's National Library of Scotland and the Scottish Poetry Library, both housing extensive resources on Scottish writers and literary works across all eras. Over the past decade, our students have secured significant funding from organizations like the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Carnegie Trust for Scottish universities. We also provide specialized bursaries for projects focusing on Scottish studies.
Our College of Arts Graduate School fosters a collaborative, interdisciplinary atmosphere for research students. We provide various support services, courses, and skill-building programs. The College of Arts boasts a dynamic, multicultural student body engaged in both taught masters and research degrees within an intellectually rich environment. Every school and department within the college conducts pioneering research that shapes academic discourse worldwide.
