The University of Glasgow is home to the UK's sole academic department focused entirely on Scottish Literature studies.
This discipline plays a distinctive role at Glasgow, having operated as an independent academic field since the 1970s. As a comparatively young area of study, Scottish literary research presents numerous unexplored opportunities. The university provides an ideal environment for groundbreaking postgraduate and postdoctoral work. Our Scottish literature program benefits from direct access to important archival collections, including the university's Special Collections and Glasgow's Mitchell Library. We also maintain close ties with Edinburgh's National Library of Scotland and the Scottish Poetry Library, both housing extensive resources on Scottish authors and literary works across all eras. Over the past decade, our students have secured significant funding from organizations like the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Carnegie Trust. Additionally, we provide specialized bursaries for projects concentrating on Scottish themes.
The College of Arts Graduate School fosters a collaborative, interdisciplinary atmosphere for research students. We provide comprehensive support through various training programs, courses, and skill development initiatives. Within the College of Arts, students join a dynamic, multicultural community engaged in both taught and research-based programs, all within an intellectually enriching setting. Every department within the college conducts pioneering research that shapes academic discourse globally.
