Latin focuses on mastering the Latin language, exploring its literature, and understanding Roman culture. As part of your studies, you'll have the chance to visit Italian archaeological sites and museums. Your starting level depends on prior experience—beginners or those with some Latin background join our level 1 course, while students with strong Higher or A-level results may begin at level 2.
The program builds a solid grammatical and vocabulary foundation, progressing to reading authentic Latin texts. You'll develop skills to interpret basic Latin writings and translate them into English while expanding your linguistic knowledge to handle literary passages. Through studying diverse authors, you'll examine literary and social contexts, language techniques, and refine critical thinking to craft well-supported essays. Honors students can spend a minimum of three weeks (typically in the summer after year 3) touring Italian historical sites and museums, with financial aid available for Single Honors participants.
Our alumni have pursued careers in education, government, administration, library sciences, archival work, and museum curation in recent years.
