The study of Greek encompasses classical Greek language, literature, and ancient Greek civilization. Advancing to Honours provides the chance to spend a minimum of three weeks (typically during the summer after third year) exploring archaeological sites and museums in Greece, with financial assistance available for Single Honours students. You may also opt to study abroad during your third year at institutions in North America, Australia, New Zealand, or Europe. Depending on your course selections, you'll engage with works by Homer and other Greek poets, Athenian tragedies and comedies, orators, historians, and philosophers like Plato. The curriculum also covers Greek political and social history, philosophy, religion, and art. Students with a strong A-level background may begin Greek at level 2, focusing on honing translation skills for both prepared and unseen texts while reinforcing grammatical fundamentals. The program introduces continuous literary works from oratory, drama, historiography, and epic, alongside developing analytical abilities through commentary and essay writing. You'll build a solid foundation in grammar and vocabulary, progressing to reading authentic ancient Greek passages and translating elementary Greek texts into English.
Our alumni have pursued careers in teaching, civil service, administration, library and archival work, as well as roles in museums and galleries in recent years.
