Studying Greek encompasses mastering the classical Greek language, exploring its literature, and delving into ancient Greek civilization. Honors students can spend a minimum of three weeks (typically during the summer after third year) touring Greek archaeological sites and museums, with financial aid available for Single Honors participants. Third-year study abroad options include universities in North America, Australia, New Zealand, or Europe. The curriculum includes reading Homer and other Greek poets, Athenian tragedies and comedies, orators, historians, and Plato's philosophical works, alongside studying Greek political history, social structures, philosophy, religion, and art. Students with strong A-level results may begin at level 2, focusing on honing translation abilities for both prepared and unseen texts while reinforcing grammar fundamentals. The program introduces continuous literary works from oratory, drama, historical writings, and epic poetry, while enhancing analytical skills through commentary and essay assignments. A solid grammatical and vocabulary foundation enables students to read basic ancient Greek passages and translate Greek to English.
