German encompasses learning a major European language and its cultural context. At Glasgow University, we offer diverse teaching spanning from 18th-century studies to modern cultural topics. You'll integrate language learning with cultural studies through practical, career-oriented courses that give our graduates a competitive edge in the job market. Your first-year curriculum depends on prior German experience. Students with SQA Higher or A-level German (grades A or B) enroll in level-1 intermediate language and culture classes. Beginners or those with minimal experience can take intensive level-1 foundation courses covering essential reading, writing, and speaking skills. Dual language students complete their year abroad in a country speaking one of their chosen languages, followed by an additional three-month placement in their fourth year to immerse in their second language's culture.
Language graduates pursue careers across various sectors including: media, arts administration, education, civil service fast-tracking, finance, business management, PR, and
international diplomacy.
Employers highly appreciate the adaptable skills developed through language degrees. A Modern Languages & Cultures degree from our School provides unique global perspectives.
