German encompasses learning a major European language and its cultural context. At Glasgow University, we offer diverse teaching approaches covering everything from 18th-century traditions to modern cultural studies. Our program integrates language acquisition with cultural understanding through practical, career-oriented coursework, giving our graduates a competitive edge in the job market. Your first-year curriculum depends on prior German experience. Students with SQA Higher or A-level German (grades A or B) enroll in our level-1 intermediate language and culture classes. Beginners or those with minimal experience can take our intensive foundation course, developing essential reading, writing, and speaking skills. Dual language students complete their year abroad in a country speaking one of their chosen languages, followed by an additional three-month placement in their fourth year to immerse themselves in their second language's culture.
Language graduates pursue diverse career paths including: media industries, arts administration, education, civil service fast-tracking, financial services, business leadership, corporate communications, and
international diplomacy.
Employers highly appreciate the adaptable skills developed through language degrees. Graduating from our School of Modern Languages & Cultures provides you with a unique global perspective.
