Studying German encompasses learning a major European language and its cultural heritage. The University of Glasgow offers diverse teaching approaches, covering everything from 18th-century traditions to modern cultural studies. Our program integrates language acquisition with cultural understanding through practical, career-oriented courses, giving our graduates a competitive edge in the job market. Your first-year curriculum depends on prior German experience. Students with SQA Higher or A-level German (grades A or B) enroll in non-beginner language and culture courses, while beginners or those with limited experience can take intensive foundation courses covering reading, writing, and speaking. Dual language students complete their year abroad in a country where one of their studied languages is spoken, followed by an additional three-month placement in their fourth year for the second language.
Language graduates pursue diverse career paths including: media industries, arts administration, education, civil service fast track programs, financial services, business management, public relations, and
international diplomacy.
