Geography examines Earth's surface as the setting for human life and activities. It explores variations in both natural and human-made environments and the connections between them. This program is recognized by the Institute of Environmental Sciences and the Royal Geographical Society.
Our setting—a city rich in culture and history, near some of the planet's most breathtaking scenery—provides exceptional opportunities for studying both human and physical geography. Fieldwork is essential to Glasgow University's Geography program, with all students participating in residential field trips to the Scottish Highlands and Mallorca for a well-rounded educational experience. Geography can be pursued through three degree paths: Arts, Science, or Social Sciences. While the Geography curriculum remains the same across these degrees, the difference lies in supplementary subjects available during the first two years. Those continuing to Honours will join a week-long residential field course in year 2, building on earlier field, lab, and statistical training through group projects, data gathering, problem-solving, and presentations. This preparation continues in year 3 with an international field class focused on dissertation-related research.
Alumni have secured roles as coastal and river engineers, environmental educators, public outreach coordinators, and hydrographic surveyors, working with organizations like the Scottish Government, British Red Cross, Transport Scotland, Scottish Water, SEPA, and SNH.
