Discover Scottish Gaelic language and culture across different historical periods up to modern times, while enhancing your Gaelic proficiency for today's employment opportunities. The program covers Gaelic folklore, songs, contemporary poetry, life writing, modern fiction, and theater entirely in Gaelic. The University's Gaelic programs and the city's active Gaelic-speaking community offer additional chances to practice the language beyond academic settings. During your advanced studies, you can opt to spend one or two semesters at Trinity College Dublin or select universities in North America and Australia.
Three specialized tracks are available: Advanced 1 for students with strong Higher Gidhlig results, Intermediate 1 for those with good Higher Gaelic marks, and Beginners 1 for complete or nearly complete newcomers. Each program builds relevant language competencies and provides tailored examination of contemporary literature alongside a comprehensive survey of Gaelic society and Scottish culture from ancient times to the present. Advanced students (years 3-4) focus on modern Scottish Gaelic language and literary works, while also exploring Irish language studies and the evolution of Gaelic dialects. The majority of instruction occurs in Gaelic.
Growing support for Gaelic has created increasing professional prospects in the field. Alumni have pursued diverse careers in media, publishing, arts, education, research, library sciences, and legal professions. Additional opportunities exist in government services, language policy roles with municipal organizations, and positions with Brd na Gidhlig.
