Discover Scottish Gaelic language and culture across different historical periods up to modern times, while enhancing your Gaelic proficiency for today's employment opportunities. The program covers Gaelic folklore, songs, contemporary poetry, life writing, modern fiction, and theater - all taught in Gaelic. The University's Gaelic programs and the city's active Gaelic-speaking community offer additional chances to practice the language beyond academic settings. During your advanced studies, you may spend one or two semesters at Trinity College Dublin or select universities in North America and Australia.
Three specialized tracks are available: Advanced 1 for students with strong Higher Gidhlig results, Intermediate 1 for those with good Higher Gaelic marks, and Beginners 1 for those starting from scratch. Each program builds relevant language competencies while examining modern Gaelic literature and exploring Scotland's Gaelic heritage from ancient times to today. Honors students (years 3-4) focus on contemporary Scottish Gaelic language and literature, including Irish studies and the evolution of Gaelic dialects. Most advanced courses are conducted in Gaelic.
Growing support for Gaelic has created new professional pathways. Alumni have pursued diverse careers in media, publishing, arts, education, research, library sciences, and legal fields. Some work in government, language policy with local councils, or Brd na Gidhlig.
