Studying French encompasses learning a major European and global language along with the diverse cultures it has shaped worldwide. Within your French program, you can specialize in various subjects such as French graphic novels, chanson française, travel literature, medieval French history, or modern France.
The School of Modern Languages & Cultures provides degree programs in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. You can pursue French, German, Italian, or Spanish as standalone majors or combine them with other disciplines for a joint degree. Portuguese and Russian are exclusively offered as joint degrees, requiring pairing with another subject. Optional courses include Catalan, Mandarin Chinese, Czech, and Polish, which can be integrated into your studies.
During your first year, you'll typically enroll in either Beginner-level courses (for those with no prior experience or only National 5/GCSE equivalent) or Non-Beginner classes (for students who have achieved a Higher, A-level, or equivalent qualification within the past three years).
Graduates in languages pursue diverse career paths including: journalism, cultural institutions, education, government fast-track programs, finance, business leadership, communications, and
international diplomacy. Employers highly prize the adaptable skills developed through language degrees. A qualification from the School of Modern Languages & Cultures provides fresh perspectives on global affairs.
