French encompasses learning a major European and global language along with the diverse cultures it has shaped worldwide. Within your French studies, you can explore various subjects such as French comics, chanson française, travel literature, medieval France, and modern French history.
The School of Modern Languages & Cultures provides degree programs in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. French, German, Italian, and Spanish can be pursued as standalone single-subject degrees or combined with other disciplines as joint degrees. Portuguese and Russian are exclusively offered as joint degrees, requiring study alongside another subject. Optional courses in Catalan, Mandarin Chinese, Czech, and Polish can also be integrated into your degree.
During your first year, you'll typically enroll in a language course at either Beginners level (for those with no prior experience or only National 5/GCSE equivalent) or Non-Beginners level (for students with a Higher, A-level, or equivalent qualification within the past three years).
Language graduates pursue diverse career paths including: media, arts institutions, education/teaching, civil service fast stream, banking, management, public relations, and diplomatic services.
