Studying French encompasses learning a major European and global language, along with exploring the diverse cultures it has shaped worldwide. Your French program allows you to specialize in various areas such as French graphic novels, chanson française, travel literature, medieval French history, and modern France.
The School of Modern Languages & Cultures provides degree programs in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. You can pursue French, German, Italian, or Spanish as standalone subjects or combine them with other disciplines for a joint degree. Portuguese and Russian are exclusively offered as joint degrees, requiring study alongside another subject. Optional courses include Catalan, Mandarin Chinese, Czech, and Polish, which can be integrated into your degree.
First-year students typically enroll in either Beginner-level courses (for those with no prior study or only National 5/GCSE equivalent) or Non-Beginner courses (for students with recent Higher/A-level grade B qualifications).
