French encompasses learning a major European and global language along with the diverse cultures it has shaped worldwide. During your French studies, you can explore various subjects such as French graphic novels, chanson française, travel literature, medieval France, and modern French history.
The School of Modern Languages & Cultures provides degree programs in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. You can pursue French, German, Italian, or Spanish as standalone single honors or combine them with other disciplines for a joint degree. Portuguese and Russian are exclusively offered as joint degrees, requiring pairing with another subject. Optional courses like Catalan, Mandarin Chinese, Czech, and Polish can also be integrated into your program.
First-year students typically enroll in either Beginner-level language courses (for those with no prior experience or National 5/GCSE equivalent) or Non-Beginner level (for students with recent Higher, A-level, or equivalent qualifications at grade B).
Language graduates pursue diverse career paths including: media, arts institutions, education/teaching, civil service fast stream, finance, business management, public relations, and diplomatic services.
