Celtic Studies offers a unique blend of language learning and exploration of both ancient and contemporary Celtic traditions across Britain and Ireland. You'll engage with the rich heritage of Celtic-speaking communities under the guidance of leading researchers while mastering one of the British Isles' Celtic tongues.
Our institution maintains vibrant exchange programs with Trinity College Dublin and universities in North America and Australia that specialize in Celtic studies. Alumni have pursued diverse career paths including education at all levels, cultural heritage roles in museums and government agencies, publishing and literary promotion, musical arts, and business ventures. Many graduates continue their academic journey through advanced studies and research positions.
Students who completed Celtic Civilisation coursework in their initial years may opt to learn Scottish Gaelic or explore medieval Celtic history alongside ancient Celtic languages. The curriculum also features specialized courses covering various facets of Celtic culture, from early Irish and Scottish belief systems to modern language policies, Gaelic oral traditions, ancient literary works, Welsh medieval writings, and distinctive Celtic artistry. Advanced students can delve deeper through specialized courses examining historical themes like medieval Ireland, the Northern Britons, and Pictish civilization. The program culminates with an independent research project, enabling you to investigate a personally meaningful subject while honing your autonomous research skills.
