The Scots Law degree serves as the essential qualification for aspiring legal professionals in Scotland. It also acts as a strong foundation for those aiming to qualify in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, or various global jurisdictions after completing their Scottish credentials. Beyond legal practice, the Scots Law program delivers academic rigor, diverse elective choices, and serves as an excellent launchpad for numerous non-legal careers.
Joint Honours students can fulfill all coursework requirements to progress toward the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice, the next step in Scottish legal training. Applicants must choose between the Scots Law LLB or Common Law LLB, as only one offer will be made. Those planning to practice in Scotland or pursue dual qualifications should select the Scots Law LLB, while Common Law LLB applicants must justify their preference in their application. Note that transfers between programs are prohibited under College of Social Science rules. The demanding LLB program provides comprehensive training in fundamental legal principles and can be completed in three years (Ordinary level) or four years (Honours level).
Aspiring Scottish solicitors or advocates must complete a one-year postgraduate Diploma in Professional Legal Practice after their LLB, followed by two years of solicitor training or up to 30 months for advocacy roles. Scots Law LLB graduates often secure positions with international firms and may practice in jurisdictions like England, the US, or Australia, though additional local law examinations are typically required.
Glasgow's flexible Law degree emphasizes employer-valued skills development, international study options, and professional placements, making the LLB suitable for diverse career paths. Graduates pursue opportunities in government, media, business, finance, international organizations, social services, law enforcement, and more.
