The Microbiology program offers an in-depth exploration of contemporary studies on bacteria, viruses, and parasites. It examines both infectious diseases and the broader ecological roles of microorganisms. Key areas of study encompass clinical and veterinary pathogens, immune system responses and pharmaceutical treatments for infections, fundamental molecular and cellular microbiology concepts, as well as environmental and industrial applications. Students can opt to specialize in Bacteriology, Parasitology, or Virology. During their final year, learners select from various advanced courses and complete a supervised research project, either at the University or an external organization. These projects may involve laboratory research, public outreach initiatives, or dissertation writing. Practical epidemiology training occurs at the Marine Biology Station in Millport, located in the Firth of Clyde. The MSci option includes an extra placement year, typically involving paid research work in industry or research institutions, either domestically or internationally.
Our alumni find employment across diverse sectors, such as public health and hospital diagnostic labs, as well as industries like food production, brewing, petroleum, water treatment, and aquaculture. Many pursue further education or research careers in academia or pharmaceuticals, while others transition into medicine or teaching. The program provides versatile, comprehensive training that opens numerous career paths. Final-year electives allow students to tailor their studies toward specific professional goals.
