Materials chemistry explores how chemical principles can be applied to fields like nanotechnology, electronics, polymer science, and energy solutions. This discipline bridges theoretical chemistry with real-world applications. Through hands-on laboratory work, expert-led lectures, and mastery of cutting-edge analytical techniques, you'll gain the expertise needed to develop next-generation materials.
The program also offers an MSci option featuring a professional placement year, either domestically or internationally, between the third and final academic years. This valuable experience boosts career prospects by refining both technical abilities and interpersonal skills. The curriculum combines practical experimentation, in-depth coursework from field-leading academics, and advanced analytical training to prepare you for creating tomorrow's innovative materials. Instruction comes from pioneering researchers whose work advances global technologies in functional nanomaterials, photonic chemistry, sustainable energy systems, solar cell development, polymeric materials, and catalytic processes.
Chemistry alumni pursue diverse careers as research scientists, process engineers, and analytical specialists, along with opportunities in management, marketing, environmental regulation, intellectual property, and financial sectors. Notable employers of recent graduates include EDF Energy, Quotient Clinical, Reckitt Benckiser, Sterling Medical Innovation, and Synergy Outsourcing.
