Immunology explores how mammals, particularly humans, have developed intricate cellular and molecular networks to defend against illnesses. The subject covers core principles along with practical applications, such as vaccine development. Additionally, it examines immune system malfunctions leading to conditions like cancer or inflammation, as well as innovative therapeutic approaches. Students acquire versatile skills and in-depth knowledge of immunological processes.
This program stands out in the UK as one of only a few offering a dedicated two-year Honours degree in immunology (years 3 and 4). Instruction is led by world-renowned immunology researchers. With over four decades of history, it's among the UK's most established immunology programs and the sole course providing full-time immunology study for two consecutive years. The curriculum includes residential field trips to locations beyond Glasgow in both third year (SCENE) and final year (The Burn). Approximately 25% of students pursue the MSci degree, which includes a year-long professional placement.
Our adaptable Life Sciences programs encourage practical application of classroom theory through laboratory and field work.
