Environmental Geoscience explores how natural processes and human activities interact with our planet. This field aims to build a sustainable future by examining humanity's impact on—and vulnerability to—environmental challenges like climate shifts, water management, pollution, and land transformation.
Our flexible curriculum lets you select your specialization after completing integrated foundational years that provide grounding for both Environmental Geoscience and Geology degrees.
Field studies form a core component of Glasgow University's Environmental Geoscience program. Starting in first year, students conduct fieldwork at locations including Holyrood Park (Edinburgh), Fife, and Arran. Advanced years feature residential and day trips. Our specialized courses equip graduates for diverse careers in environmental monitoring, geotechnical engineering, and hazard assessment, with program accreditation from the Institute of Environmental Sciences (IES). The Hunterian Museum partnership gives students access to exceptional geological specimens.
Four fully-equipped laboratories operate around the clock, providing microscopes, geological samples, mapping tools, and specialized software. International experience is valuable in geoscience careers, and we promote study abroad through extensive exchange programs.
Graduates have secured positions with leading environmental organizations including Atkins, BAM Nuttall Ltd, Equinor Hywind, Scottish Water, and environmental agencies.
