Earning an MPhil or PhD involves conducting thorough research on a specialized subject and producing novel insights that advance your discipline. Our MPhil/PhD candidates engage in pioneering research that aligns with the School's academic priorities. We encourage applications in both human and physical geography, especially for projects that build upon and enhance our current research group expertise. Geography implements a formal upgrade review after the first year of postgraduate research. Throughout your PhD journey, we offer personalized guidance to help you excel and complete your degree within the designated period. While full-time enrollment is standard, part-time options may be available for home/EU students.

There's no more crucial moment to pursue geography studies, regardless of your professional goals. Pressing worldwide challenges like climate change, migration, ecological decline, and societal integration dominate contemporary discourse and are fundamentally geographic in nature, making this among the most pertinent academic fields today.

A Geography research degree from the University of Exeter provides exceptional career preparation. Graduates develop sought-after competencies including data collection, analytical thinking, project management, technical writing, public speaking, and collaboration. Most research students gain valuable teaching experience, further expanding their professional skill set.
