Faculty in Modern Languages explore diverse research areas spanning literature, linguistics, translation studies, and film. We guide PhD candidates investigating historical periods from medieval times to the contemporary era across our seven primary languages, often facilitating interdisciplinary collaborations with other departments within the College of Humanities and other institutions.Our Chinese Studies program integrates specialized knowledge in Chinese literature, translation, cultural studies, art and architectural history, intellectual history, modern Chinese foreign policy, China-Middle East relations, and China-Europe cultural exchanges.This group organizes the College-wide Chinese Studies Seminar Series and oversees the Global China Research Centre, fostering interdisciplinary scholarship on China across humanities, arts, and social science disciplines.
