We highly advise reaching out informally to your prospective supervisor(s) with your research plan before making a formal application. This allows you to confirm their availability for supervision and get feedback on whether your proposal requires additional development.
Thriving in a collaborative research setting is ideal for your academic growth. Our students are encouraged to interact with peers and leading academics, fostering a dynamic, encouraging, and welcoming research culture.
The group framework offers excellent support, helping research students maintain consistent progress. Over 90% submit within the EPSRC timeframe, with many publishing multiple scientific papers during their studies.
We recognize the importance of being immersed in an inspiring environment with fellow researchers throughout your degree. Regular discussions about your work are crucial for long-term achievement. To facilitate this, we host postgraduate seminars where students present their research, exchange ideas, and receive feedback. Our goal is to integrate you into a tight-knit community of driven researchers who collaborate and support one another.
Each postgraduate research student receives a second supervisor or mentor for guidance, and we maintain an open, accessible policy. You'll complete a comprehensive induction and training program designed to:
equip you with the technical, mathematical, organizational, and interpersonal skills needed for your research,
keep you informed about the latest developments in physics and astronomy via our Colloquium Programme,
provide essential safety and fire training,
familiarize you with departmental facilities, support services, and monitoring systems across the Faculty.
