The Center for American Archaeology seeks to advance studies conducted by departmental archaeologists and their partners across all areas of American archaeology. It also works to involve postgraduate researchers in Americanist themes and projects through multidisciplinary methods.
The Archaeology Department's research spans from early human history to modern times, distinguished by theory-driven fieldwork and a dedication to pioneering methodologies.
Our faculty and doctoral candidates conduct research across Britain, continental Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas, with the Department achieving 4th place in the UK for world-class research in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework.

Students applying to enter directly into the MPhil/PhD programme would normally be expected to have a Masters degree with Merit or equivalent in Archaeology, or other relevant qualifications such as a doctorate in another subject.
