As one of the world's six most spoken languages, Portuguese boasts more than 200 million speakers across Portugal, Brazil, and African nations like Angola and Mozambique. At the University of Exeter, learning Portuguese immerses you in one of the planet's richest cultures, exploring its literary, linguistic, and artistic expressions.
You'll join a vibrant research community that investigates not just Lusophone cultures and literatures, but also Portuguese linguistics - covering everything from traditional and emerging dialects to contemporary sociolinguistics in African Portuguese-speaking countries and Creole communities. The program offers optional modules in linguistics, literature, medieval studies, visual arts, film, and cultural studies, allowing you to tailor your academic journey.
Your third year includes an international experience in Portugal or Brazil, where you can study at prestigious institutions like Portugal's Coimbra and Porto or Brazil's Santa Catarina universities. Alternatively, you may choose a British Council English teaching placement or gain professional experience through overseas employment. EU Erasmus funding may support work placements in Portugal.
Portuguese studies are available through three flexible options:
Combined with one or two additional languages (such as Chinese, French, German, Italian, Russian, or Spanish) in our BA Modern Languages program (with beginner-level restrictions)
Paired with disciplines like Art History & Visual Culture, Classics, English, Film Studies, History, International Relations, Politics, Philosophy, or Sociology in our Combined Honors degrees
Or customized with various subjects through our Flexible Combined Honors program
