The Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies provides PhD Literature supervision across all areas of faculty research expertise, encompassing diverse literary traditions and critical approaches. Our specialists cover works from early modern to contemporary periods in English and multiple other languages. Key research areas span Early Modern studies, Romanticism, 18th-19th century literature, American and Caribbean works, postcolonial studies, modern and postmodern literature, eco-criticism, nature writing, black diaspora literature, travel narratives, World War I literature, human rights in literature, science fiction, and post-human studies.

Many alumni from our Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies have pursued successful writing careers.
Other former doctoral students now work as academics, university professors, educators, publishing professionals, editors, media specialists, arts managers, theater directors, drama consultants, and language translators.

Qualification Requirements

You will need a good Masters degree, or equivalent, in a related subject. Some applicants may be accepted on the basis of an outstanding honours degree. A well-developed research proposal is also essential. If English is not your first language, then we will require you to have IELTS 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in writing, or equivalent, TOEFL IBT 100 overall with minimum component scores: listening 17, reading 18, writing 26, and speaking 20.
