Our MPhil in Art History and Theory provides supervision across diverse fields, maintaining a strong tradition of postgraduate education in European art and architecture from 1300 onward, as well as the artistic traditions of Latin America and the United States. The Essex Art History department comprises a vibrant community of scholars exploring image creation and architectural environments across cultures and media, spanning from early modern times to contemporary works. Our faculty employs varied methodologies in research and instruction, united by a shared focus on three fundamental principles
Alumni from our program hold positions in universities, museums, galleries, and arts organizations across the UK and internationally. Some have achieved professorial roles at prestigious institutions like CUNY, while others curate exhibitions at renowned venues including Tate Modern.

Qualification Requirements

You will need a good honours degree and a Masters degree, or equivalent, in a related subject. A well-developed research proposal is also essential. If English is not your first language, then we will require you to have IELTS 7.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component, TOEFL IBT 100 overall with minimum component scores: listening 17, reading 18, writing 17, and speaking 20.
