At Essex, we approach philosophy by reconnecting it to real-world existential, social, and political concerns. Our innovative methodology breaks down conventional barriers, encouraging cross-disciplinary conversations between various philosophical traditions. We stand out globally by bridging the gap between Analytic and Continental philosophical traditions.
The MA Philosophy program offers comprehensive training in modern and contemporary European thought. Our faculty specializes in critical theory, phenomenology, German Idealism, 19th-century German philosophy, aesthetics, existentialism, contemporary French philosophy, psychoanalytic theory, and medical humanities.
Students can select specialized modules, enhance their research and professional skills through an intensive Writing Workshop, and complete a dissertation in their chosen research area.
Numerous philosophy alumni pursue PhD studies after completing their MA. We provide doctoral supervision in diverse areas including Continental thought, Critical Social Theory, and the History of philosophy.
Our graduates have established successful careers in law, media, local government, HM Revenue and Customs, and senior positions within the Civil Service.
