Our MA in Modern and Contemporary Literature provides an exceptional exploration of 20th and 21st century literary works and cultural movements. At Essex, you'll examine not only classic English texts but also global literature written in English. The program spans different eras, regions, and styles, blending conventional academic approaches with inventive methods of textual analysis.

As a graduate literature student, you'll engage with various writing forms, from poetic verse to modern novels, while investigating multiple literary traditions. These range from early 1900s European works to contemporary American writings, including emerging voices from the Caribbean.
