Our Master of Arts in Art History and Theory provides guidance across diverse specializations, maintaining a strong legacy of advanced study in key aspects of European art and architecture from the 14th century onward, as well as the artistic traditions of Latin America and the United States. The Art History program at Essex brings together a vibrant community of scholars exploring the creation and interpretation of visual arts and architectural spaces across different cultures and mediums, spanning from the Renaissance era to contemporary times.

Numerous alumni have established careers in universities, prominent museums, galleries, and various arts-related fields across the UK and internationally. Some have achieved professorial positions at prestigious institutions like CUNY, while others hold curatorial roles at renowned establishments including Tate Modern.

Qualification Requirements

You will need a good honours degree and a masters degree, or equivalent, in a related subject. A well-developed research proposal is also essential. If English is not your first language, then we will require you to have IELTS 7.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component, TOEFL IBT 100 overall with minimum component scores: listening 17, reading 18, writing 17, and speaking 20.
