Our LLB Law with Criminology program offers comprehensive academic training that combines legal studies with criminology. You'll gain a solid foundation in contemporary criminal law and justice issues within broader societal contexts. The curriculum highlights how English and Welsh law interacts with European and international legal frameworks.
You'll cultivate a nuanced understanding of law's role within social, political, and economic systems. Beyond learning legal principles, you'll examine law's societal functions, philosophical underpinnings, policy matters, and reform initiatives. Essex specializes in commercial law, public law, and human rights law, ranking 3rd in the UK for legal research power (THE research power measure, REF2021).
Instruction comes from criminology and sociology experts in our top-ranked Department of Sociology (9th in the UK per QS World University Rankings 2022). The program includes training in criminological research techniques like survey design, crime mapping, interviews, and focus groups, alongside legal research methodologies.
At Essex, we go beyond traditional legal education. We inspire students to champion justice while providing the tools to become change-makers across various professions.
From day one, we encourage strategic career thinking. During your first two years, alongside core law modules, you'll complete career management coursework to identify strengths, understand employer expectations (both legal and non-legal), and boost employability.
Our annual law fair connects students with legal firms and professional qualification providers. Graduates enter diverse fields including legal practice, business, finance, government, education, social services, and law enforcement.
