At Essex, we ground philosophy in real-world existential, social, and political challenges. We emphasize how philosophy connects with other fields of study—including politics, culture, law, medicine, and art—and apply this perspective to pressing societal concerns, such as debates around mental health laws or end-of-life care policies.
The four-year MPhilos program (extended to five years with study abroad or placement) builds a strong philosophical foundation during your first three years. Your final year includes advanced MA-level modules, enabling deeper exploration of specialized topics and culminating in a draft journal article. The curriculum spans diverse subjects, from life's meaning to critiques of capitalism, bridging ancient thought with contemporary European philosophy. Our School excels in:
Ethics, Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, and Modern European Philosophy (encompassing critical theory, phenomenology, and existentialism)
Recognizing evolving workplace demands, we prioritize developing graduates who can approach problems with logical, creative thinking and clear communication.
Essex is committed to fostering an academic environment where you cultivate essential skills—both for mastering philosophy and succeeding in your future career aspirations.
