At Essex, we ground philosophy in real-world existential, social, and political challenges. We emphasize how philosophy connects with other fields—politics, culture, law, medicine, and art—and apply this perspective to pressing public matters, like debates around mental health laws or end-of-life care policies.
The four-year MPhilos program (extended to five years with study abroad or placement) builds a strong philosophical foundation in your first three years. Your final year includes advanced MA-level modules, exploring deeper topics and culminating in a journal-style research project. You'll examine diverse subjects, from life's meaning to critiques of capitalism, spanning ancient thought to contemporary European philosophy, with special focus on:
Ethics, Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, and Modern European Philosophy (encompassing critical theory, phenomenology, and existentialism)
We recognize evolving workplace demands. Employers seek graduates who can approach problems with logical, creative thinking and communicate effectively.
Essex is committed to fostering the skills you need to excel in philosophy and succeed in your future career.
