Our PhD in Human Rights was created to address the needs of students with a demonstrated passion for human rights who seek to conduct doctoral research that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries, incorporating a distinctly multidisciplinary approach.

We offer supervision across diverse human rights research areas, with expertise spanning numerous specialized fields. Use our research finder tool to identify potential supervisors by entering your research focus and exploring the matching results. Research areas cover subjects like torture prevention, corporate responsibility, religious freedom protections, child soldiers, democratic evaluation methodologies, and the intersection of human rights with foreign investment. While emphasizing international and comparative human rights, our faculty also researches UK-specific human rights and democracy issues.

Alumni from our Human Rights Centre pursue diverse career paths in government agencies, international organizations, NGOs, and academic research.

Our graduates currently hold positions at prominent institutions including the Council of Europe, United Nations, OSCE, Save the Children, Shelter, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the International Commission of Jurists.
