Our PhD program in Applied Linguistics provides supervision focused on second language acquisition and learning research.
Our faculty specialize in: second language syntax, explicit/implicit knowledge acquisition, vocabulary development, individual learning differences, language assessment, figurative language, and discourse processing. Past doctoral projects have investigated topics such as Korean/Spanish speakers' acquisition of English articles, working memory's influence on self-correction in L2 learners, and technology-assisted second language acquisition. Students can pursue either a traditional three-year PhD or our four-year Integrated New Route PhD option.
Our alumni hold academic positions worldwide as educators and researchers, while others have established careers in publishing, social services, administration, and commercial sectors.
With the diverse specializations available in our Department of Language and Linguistics, graduate career paths vary significantly. Many PhD recipients enter academia as lecturers or researchers across multiple disciplines - potentially working in departments of linguistics, education, sociology, cognitive science, or English studies, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of our program.
