Our BSc Human Biology (including foundation year) welcomes both Home and EU students. This program is ideal if your current qualifications don't meet the entry requirements for the standard three-year course and you're seeking to enhance your English proficiency and academic abilities.
Spanning four years, this course begins with a foundation year (Year Zero) offered by our Essex Pathways Department, followed by three years in the School of Life Sciences. Year Zero covers three academic subjects aligned with your chosen degree, along with a mandatory academic skills module and optional English language support for international students. Upon successfully completing Year Zero, you'll advance to the School of Life Sciences to finish your degree.
During your three years in the School of Life Sciences, you'll explore human anatomy and physiology, from cellular and molecular processes to disease mechanisms and immune responses. This program leverages biological fundamentals and modern technology to examine the intricacies of the human body. You'll discover how genetic and cellular breakthroughs are revolutionizing treatments and disease prevention.
At Essex, key research focuses on protein structures and their connection to diseases, providing insights into cancer pathways and neurological damage. Another research priority involves computational analysis of epigenetics and DNA's role in human illnesses. In your final year, you'll undertake an independent research project. Past projects have investigated protein mutations linked to conditions like blindness and cancer, as well as cellular death processes and antibiotic resistance.
