Our BSc Genetics program (including a foundation year) is ideal if you don't currently meet the entry requirements for the standard three-year course and need to strengthen your academic skills before degree-level study.
This four-year program begins with a foundation year (Year Zero) through our Essex Pathways Department, followed by three years in the School of Life Sciences. Year Zero covers three subject areas related to your chosen degree plus essential academic skills training, with optional English language support for international students. Upon completing Year Zero successfully, you'll advance to the main degree program.
During your three years in the School of Life Sciences, you'll explore practical biomedical applications, including tissue specialization in complex organisms and the cellular mechanisms behind cancer development. The genetics curriculum covers inheritance patterns, DNA function, evolutionary processes, and genetic variation. You'll gain hands-on experience with modern laboratory techniques while contributing to ongoing genetic research.
