Crime cannot exist independently of society. Our program merges in-depth criminology studies with a comprehensive exploration of sociological issues, empowering you to examine crime, offenders, and justice systems within broader social frameworks. Under the guidance of our faculty experts in terrorism, incarceration, substance abuse, and media portrayals of crime, you'll investigate how unlawful behavior intersects with factors like age, gender, and societal constructs including power dynamics and personal identity. You can enhance your academic journey by spending a semester or year at one of our global partner institutions. Our four-year program option includes an international study period during your third year, mirroring the three-year curriculum while offering this valuable experience.Studying overseas exposes you to diverse cultures and languages, broadening both your educational and personal horizons while demonstrating to future employers your adaptability, initiative, and organizational skills.For full-year international study, you'll pay just 15% of standard Essex tuition fees, with no additional charges at your host institution.Professional placement optionAlternatively, you can opt for a work placement year to gain practical experience with an external organization, giving you a career advantage and valuable industry connections. While you'll take the lead in securing your placement, you'll receive full support from both your academic department and our dedicated Employability and Careers Center.
A-levels: BBB - BBC or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A-levels, including B in one essay based subject.
BTEC: DDM - DMM or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of the equivalent of 2 full A-levels. 
Combined qualifications on the UCAS tariff: 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A levels or equivalent. 
IB: 30 - 29 points or three Higher Level certificates with 555-554.
IB Career-related Programme: We consider combinations of IB Diploma Programme courses with BTECs or other qualifications. 
QAA-approved Access to HE Diploma: 6 level 3 credits at Distinction and 39 level 3 credits at Merit, depending on subject studied - advice on acceptability can be provided
T-levels: We consider T-levels on a case-by-case basis, depending on subject studied. The offer for most courses is Distinction overall. Depending on the course applied for there may be additional requirements, which may include a specific grade in the Core. 
IELTS- 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each component TOEFL IBT- 76 overall, with a minimum of 18 in reading, 17 in listening, 20 in speaking and 17 in writing
