In a free society, are there ever valid reasons to restrict freedom of expression? Do individuals unite by choice or necessity? Political, economic, and social concerns dominate both national and global headlines, influencing our daily experiences while molding what lies ahead. By studying Sociology, Politics, and Economics, you gain deeper insights into the world. This field explores democracy's connection to effective governance, economic mechanisms, decision-making processes, and how economies shape societal prosperity. Our program delivers comprehensive education in political science, economics, and sociology, examining the diverse social dynamics, relationships, and structures that define modern life. Taught by three of the UK's top social science departments—Sociology, Government, and Economics—at Essex, these interconnected disciplines help you tackle society's most pressing questions. With flexible course options, you can specialize in areas such as: Public policy on healthcare, environmental issues, crime, and aging; Multiculturalism, human rights, and citizenship; Workplace dynamics and consumer culture; Political influence and authority; Concepts of liberty, justice, and equality; Applied economics and policy-making; Micro- and macroeconomic principles; Global financial institutions and development strategies. Our Department of Sociology and Criminology ranks 73rd worldwide and among the UK's top 15 for sociology (QS World University Rankings 2024). The Department of Government is Europe's elite, placing 2nd in the UK for politics research (REF 2021), while Economics ranks in the UK's top 25 for econometrics (QS 2024). Global Opportunities Expand your horizons through study abroad programs. We encourage you to spend a term or year at an international partner university. Our four-year option includes a third year abroad or on an overseas placement, mirroring the three-year curriculum otherwise. International study cultivates cultural awareness, enhances your academic profile, and demonstrates adaptability to future employers. Full-year participants pay just 15% of standard Essex fees, with no additional tuition at the host institution. Professional Experience Gain an edge with a placement year, acquiring real-world experience through external employment.
