Our BA in Modern History offers you the chance to explore British, European, and global history from the 18th century to today. This dynamic era witnessed groundbreaking discoveries and globalization—an age of swift transformation, devastating conflicts, and faith in social and scientific advancement.
From examining the transatlantic slave trade to tracing revolutionary movements across China, Russia, and Latin America, from analyzing colonialism's impact in India and Africa to studying the Cold War's origins and aftermath, you'll explore how ideas, cultures, and economies have shaped our modern world over the past 250 years.
With diverse optional modules available, you can focus on topics like colonialism, social inequality, cultural identity, citizenship, multiculturalism, and human rights—both locally and globally.
You'll learn from internationally recognized scholars in a truly global academic environment. Our strong connections with the Essex Record Office, among the UK's finest county archives, also provide unique opportunities to engage with local history.

Beyond gaining historical knowledge and contemporary insights, this program equips you with valuable career skills. You'll develop the ability to critically evaluate information, articulate arguments clearly in speech and writing, and collaborate effectively while working independently.
