Our BA Journalism with Human Rights program equips you with core principles and practices that support global human rights advocacy. Simultaneously, you'll hone your journalism skills, learning to evaluate information through the lens of human rights legislation. You'll develop a profound understanding of contemporary society and audience engagement, cultivating your distinctive journalistic approach. Investigate diverse human rights issues spanning warfare to migration. This blends with hands-on journalism training where you'll utilize multimedia platforms including radio, television, and digital media while expanding your international journalism expertise. The program offers customizable study paths with optional focus areas such as: Human rights safeguards Universal human rights applicability Media production techniques Global reporting At Essex, our expertise spans business law, public law, criminal justice, health law, legal technology, socio-legal studies, and human rights law. Your final year culminates in a multimedia capstone project connecting journalism with human rights themes. Weekly schedules typically include one-hour lectures paired with one-hour seminars or extended two-hour sessions, varying by module. Global Learning Opportunities Your academic journey extends beyond campus. We facilitate international study at partner institutions through year-long or term-long exchange programs. The four-year degree option includes a third year abroad or an international placement, mirroring the three-year curriculum otherwise. International study fosters cultural immersion, language acquisition, and academic enrichment while demonstrating adaptability and organizational skills to future employers. Full-year exchanges qualify for reduced tuition—just 15% of standard Essex fees, with no additional charges at host institutions. Professional Placements Upon enrollment, you may opt to incorporate a placement year. While securing placements is student-driven, you'll receive dedicated support from departmental advisors and career services. Placement years incur only 20% of regular tuition fees.

A-levels: BBB - BBC or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A-levels, including B in one essay based subject.

BTEC: DDM - DMM or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of the equivalent of 2 full A-levels. 

Combined qualifications on the UCAS tariff: 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A levels or equivalent. 

IB: 30 - 29 points or three Higher Level certificates with 555-554.

IB Career-related Programme: We consider combinations of IB Diploma Programme courses with BTECs or other qualifications. 

QAA-approved Access to HE Diploma: 6 level 3 credits at Distinction and 39 level 3 credits at Merit, depending on subject studied - advice on acceptability can be provided

T-levels: We consider T-levels on a case-by-case basis, depending on subject studied. The offer for most courses is Distinction overall. Depending on the course applied for there may be additional requirements, which may include a specific grade in the Core.

IELTS- 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each component TOEFL IBT- 76 overall, with a minimum of 18 in reading, 17 in listening, 20 in speaking and 17 in writing
