Our BA Journalism and Criminology program allows you to examine modern society and criminal behavior while honing your journalistic abilities to evaluate, communicate, and interpret information through a societal lens. You'll investigate diverse subjects from video games' influence on crime to global terrorism. This academic journey combines with hands-on journalism training, where you'll master multimedia platforms including radio, TV, and digital media while expanding your understanding of worldwide journalism practices. The program offers customizable study paths with optional modules covering: Legal Systems and Society Media production techniques Globalization's impact on criminal activity Worldwide News Reporting In your final year, you'll synthesize your learning through a capstone multimedia project focused on a criminology-related theme. As part of a premier UK social science institution, you'll gain unparalleled insights into the societal contexts you'll document. Weekly schedules typically include one-hour lectures paired with one-hour seminars or two-hour seminar blocks per module, with variations depending on subject requirements. International Study Opportunities Your learning extends beyond campus boundaries. We facilitate educational expansion through study abroad programs at partner universities. The four-year degree option includes a third year abroad or an international placement, mirroring the three-year curriculum structure. Overseas study fosters cultural immersion, language development, and academic enrichment while demonstrating to future employers your adaptability, organizational skills, and global perspective. Full-year abroad participants pay just 15% of standard Essex tuition fees, with no additional charges at host institutions.
A-levels: BBB - BBC or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A-levels, including B in one essay based subject.
BTEC: DDM - DMM or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of the equivalent of 2 full A-levels. 
Combined qualifications on the UCAS tariff: 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A levels or equivalent. 
IB: 30 - 29 points or three Higher Level certificates with 555-554.
IB Career-related Programme: We consider combinations of IB Diploma Programme courses with BTECs or other qualifications. 
QAA-approved Access to HE Diploma: 6 level 3 credits at Distinction and 39 level 3 credits at Merit, depending on subject studied - advice on acceptability can be provided
T-levels: We consider T-levels on a case-by-case basis, depending on subject studied. The offer for most courses is Distinction overall. Depending on the course applied for there may be additional requirements, which may include a specific grade in the Core.
IELTS- 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each component TOEFL IBT- 76 overall, with a minimum of 18 in reading, 17 in listening, 20 in speaking and 17 in writing
