Our four-year BA in History and Film Studies (including a foundation year) is designed for students whose current qualifications don't meet the entry requirements for the standard three-year program. This pathway helps build both subject knowledge and academic skills to prepare you for degree-level study.
The program begins with a foundation year (Year Zero), followed by three years of specialized study. In Year Zero, you'll take three subject-specific modules alongside a core academic skills course, with English language support available for international students.
From day one, you'll join Essex's vibrant global community at the UK's most internationally diverse campus university.
After successfully completing Year Zero through our Essex Pathways Department, you'll advance to the Department of History for the remainder of your degree.
This unique program examines how historical study and documentation have evolved with the emergence of film. You'll develop expertise in both disciplines, gaining a comprehensive understanding of their intersection.
In history, you'll examine pivotal moments from early modern to contemporary eras, analyzing how political, social, and cultural transformations affect individuals, communities, and regions. Your film studies will span diverse genres, historical periods, and global cinema traditions, including Hollywood productions, independent films, documentaries, and television.
Our History Department offers exceptional local history resources and maintains close ties with the Essex Record Office, recognized as one of Britain's finest county archives.
