The roots of today's legal framework trace back centuries. Case law represents the tangible implementation of historical precedents that shape current rulings. This forward-thinking program examines various historical eras and contemporary legal practices across multiple fields, offering profound understanding of how critical historical events continue to influence legal outcomes.

You'll receive comprehensive education in both history and law through this program. The curriculum cultivates analytical, reflective, and critical thinking skills essential to both fields. While highlighting their common ground, you'll also examine their distinct methodologies and theoretical approaches. The program blends foundational coursework with specialized electives, enabling you to focus on your particular interests.
Our History Department boasts exceptional research and teaching standards, with most work recognized as world-class or internationally significant (REF 2014). We maintain close ties with the Essex Record Office, among Britain's finest regional archives. Student feedback reflects our success: 97% of history students reported overall satisfaction (NSS 2018).

At Essex, we go beyond training exceptional legal or history professionals. We ignite your passion for justice while providing the tools to drive meaningful change, regardless of your chosen career path. From day one, we encourage strategic, expansive thinking about professional development. During your first two years, alongside core legal studies, you'll complete career management modules to identify strengths, understand employer expectations, and boost employability. Our annual law fair connects students with legal firms and training providers. Graduates enter diverse fields including law, business, finance, government, education, social services, and law enforcement.
