Our BA History program challenges students to investigate how political, social, and cultural transformations affect individuals, communities, and regions. Study topics ranging from African-American enslavement to Soviet governance, from Essex communities to European witch trials, and from medical history to Chinese revolutionary movements - all designed to illuminate contemporary issues through historical understanding.Students enjoy extensive optional module choices covering both local and global subjects.Our internationally recognized faculty come from across the globe, creating a vibrant academic environment. We maintain strong connections with the exceptional Essex Record Office for local historical research.Assessments typically include essays, case analyses, critical reviews, research plans, and a substantial dissertation. Weekly learning involves two-hour seminar sessions, with workshop groups typically comprising 15 students.Global study opportunitiesWe believe education transcends campus boundaries. Students can enhance their learning by spending a term or year at one of our international partner institutions. Our four-year program option includes a third year abroad or on international placement, while maintaining the same curriculum as the three-year degree.International study cultivates cultural awareness, language skills, and academic growth while demonstrating to future employers your adaptability and organizational abilities.Full-year abroad students pay just 15% of standard Essex tuition fees, with no additional charges at the host institution.Professional placement optionUpon enrollment, students may choose to incorporate a placement year into their studies. While students secure their own placements, they receive comprehensive support from both academic departments and our dedicated placements team.Placement year participants pay only 20% of their regular tuition fees during that year.
A-levels: BBB - BBC or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A-levels, including B in one essay based subject.
BTEC: DDM - DMM or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of the equivalent of 2 full A-levels.
Combined qualifications on the UCAS tariff: 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A levels or equivalent.
IB: 30 - 29 points or three Higher Level certificates with 555-554.
IB Career-related Programme: We consider combinations of IB Diploma Programme courses with BTECs or other qualifications.
QAA-approved Access to HE Diploma: 6 level 3 credits at Distinction and 39 level 3 credits at Merit, depending on subject studied - advice on acceptability can be provided
T-levels: We consider T-levels on a case-by-case basis, depending on subject studied. The offer for most courses is Distinction overall. Depending on the course applied for there may be additional requirements, which may include a specific grade in the Core.
IELTS- 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each component TOEFL IBT- 76 overall, with a minimum of 18 in reading, 17 in listening, 20 in speaking and 17 in writing
